Earlier this year, I wrote about Lesspain’s KYNO, a brand-new piece of software that looks to fill the void between your camera and the editing suite. As of now, it’s officially out of beta and ready for action.

In case you missed that first article about the workflow tool, here’s a quick recap of what KYNO is and what it does. Basically, it’s a standalone app for Mac that performs a wide array of media management tasks. It allows you to view all of your footage (no matter where it’s located or how it’s formatted) in a variety of useful ways, batch, label, and rename it, add and manipulate metadata, export still frames, and of course, transcode it to various edit-friendly formats. There’s plenty more that the software does, but that’s the core functionality.

Here’s the introduction video that shows what KYNO is all about.

And here’s a quick tour of the Kyno interface to show you how it all works. If you want more specific tutorials, the Lesspain Software YouTube channel has quite a few of them.

Here’s a quick written overview of the main features:

  • Easy access to your media: Super-fast searching, filtering, and media asset management give instant access to videos directly from your hard drive or SD card.
  • State-of-the-art technology: Play & quality-check footage in a high-performance player with accurate speed controls, widescreen bars, high-quality playback, and more
  • Find content fast: With ingest-free media browsing, media-aware filters, markers, sub-clips, tags, ratings, and more, you get what you need fast.
  • No-fuss conversion & export: Support for a wide variety of industry-standard target formats, with a strong focus on productivity-enhancing batch operations
  • Up-to-date integrations: Easily fit Kyno into any video workflow: export to Excel or send files with metadata to Final Cut Pro or Premiere Pro

    Get unlimited royalty-free 4K footage

As I mentioned in the original article, there are a few things that KYNO doesn’t do. Perhaps the biggest one is that the program doesn’t support any RAW media flavor, which could very well be a deal-breaker for many of the people shooting on modern digital cinema cameras. That said, it looks like the developers are planning on adding RAW support in the future, so keep your eyes peeled if that’s important to you.

Last but not least, the good folks at Lesspain Software are offering a discount code for PostLine readers, allowing you to save $60 on Kyno. This will knock the price down from $159 to $99. If you’re interested, just head over here and use the code “PLKYNO16” before midnight on October 12th, 2016, when the code expires.
