It’s that time of year again. As we approach 2024, the Adobe Premiere Pro update is upon us, and there’s a whole host of features to get stuck into – some are new and improved iterations of previous tools, while others are new. This year, Adobe has embraced AI, using it to enhance and streamline its NLE (non-linear editor) and, in the process, giving us a glimpse at how this new and evolving technology will change the editing landscape forever.

Below, we take a look at the key updates – what can you expect, and how does this improve the editing experience on Adobe Premiere Pro 2024?

A timeline that’s 5x faster

Anyone who uses Adobe Premiere Pro extensively knows that it’s prone to lagging, glitches, crashes, and everything in between. Adobe has been working hard behind the scenes to reverse these frustrating issues and present its flagship NLE as the state-of-the-art go-to for professional editors. Introducing a timeline that’s five times faster will certainly go some way in achieving that. Adobe’s feature summary states, “The new high-performance timeline drawing is more interactive and responsive for buttery smooth editing and trimming.”

A new Recovery Mode

Adobe has introduced a new Recovery Mode, promising that even if something goes wrong, you’ll be able to “seamlessly pick up right where you left off with automatic project recovery.”

When you reopen Adobe Premiere Pro 2024 after an app crash, you’ll get an automatic pop-up where you can reopen projects in their previous state. Meanwhile, if you’d like to restore a previous version of your project, you can revert to the last user-saved state by using File > Revert. Nice and easy.

Speed is the aim of the game

The latest Adobe Premiere Pro update is all about speed, which is reflected in new features such as Video Effects Manager and Project Templates. Video Effects Manager allows you to manage all of your third-party plugins in one simple, easy place. You’ll be able to “identify, troubleshoot, and disable incompatible plugins to improve system stability” quicker than ever before, and that means more time spent editing.

Meanwhile, Project Templates will allow editors to save projects as templates for future use. When you start a new project, you can load up a previous template with the bins and sequences already organized. Again, it’s all about speeding up your workflow. You can select File > Save as Template to save a project as a template.

New text-based editing features

Speaking of speed, Adobe has fully embraced AI in this Premiere Pro update. The future of editing is clear to see, and the latest text-based editing feature is a great example of that. This isn’t a brand new feature, but it feels more powerful than ever, thanks to AI.

You’ll now be able to delete all pauses with a single click and re-transcribe an audio file using a specific channel or a mix of all channels.

Audio auto-tagging

Alongside strengthened text-based editing, there’s now audio auto-tagging. Using AI, the software can now automatically tag audio files as dialogue, music, SFX, or ambiance. When you select a tag in the Essential Sound panel, all the clips tagged in that category will be automatically selected, giving you easier and quicker access to creating professional sound.

Enhance Speech

If you were working with poor audio, there was a time when this could take a seriously long time to clear up (if it was even possible to begin with). With Enhance Speech, AI is now doing that heavy work for you, removing background noise and drastically improving the quality of poorly recorded dialogue in a matter of seconds. It’s stuff like this that gets us excited about AI being introduced into the editing world.

Simplified color settings

In earlier versions, such as Adobe Premiere Pro 2023, color settings tended to be spread across different panels and general preferences. In the 2024 Premiere Pro update, we’re getting a revamp with simplified color settings, consolidating all of these color selections into a single tab.

Under Lumetri Color, the Settings tab will consolidate Preferences, Project color settings, Source Clip color settings, Sequence color settings, and Sequence Clip color settings. Making changes is quicker and easier than ever before.

Other updates

The latest Adobe Premiere Pro update has plenty of other things to get excited about. SRT Support will be allowing you to stream packets of information from Premiere Pro to different viewers, while there’s now support for H/W decode and encoding of H264/HEVC files on Intel Discrete Graphics (Intel Arc) cards, which should further boost the app’s performance.

You’ll now be able to add, edit, and retain a single set of custom destinations in Export mode. Previously, custom destinations were saved per sequence, and there was no easy way to share them with other sequences and projects.

How do I update Premiere Pro?

If you’re looking at how to update Premiere Pro, it’s very simple. If you’re logged in to the Adobe Creative Cloud and have automatic updates switched on, the new Premiere Pro 2024 will simply load up for you.

Key takeaways

So, lots of tweaks and changes to digest for the 2024 version of Adobe Premiere Pro – some big, some small. It’s clear now that AI is here to stay, and we’re really excited to see how this technology enhances and aids our video editing experience. It’s not necessarily about AI taking over from the editor and removing us from a job, but more about how it can do the heavy lifting and streamline what were often very mundane, time-consuming, and stressful jobs.

With all these handy new features and Artlist’s high-quality footage, music, sound effects, and more, editing seems like it will be quicker and easier than ever before. That can only be a good thing.
