Over a month ago, we launched the Artgrid & Artlist Edit Challenge, as a contest that focuses on creators’ ability to tell an inspiring story using stock footage and Artlist music. It was our biggest contest to date, and your response has been overwhelming.

After watching more than 1,000 of your submissions, we are ready to announce the 10 winners who will take home a total of $35k in filmmaking gear, highlighted by 3 Blackmagic Pocket 4k Cameras, Zhiyun Gimbals and DJI Mini Mavic drones.

The 3 Contest Categories

In the Edit Challenge, we asked content creators to create a video in one of the following formats using only assets from Artgrid and Artlist:

  1. An ad for a fictional brand (up to 30 seconds long)
  2. A trailer for a fictional film (up to 90 seconds long)
  3. A music video for an Artlist song (no longer than 5 minutes)

There are 3 winners in each category, plus a cross-category judges’ favorite video. We recruited an esteemed panel that consists of Ryan Connolly from FilmRiot, YouTuber D4Darious and travel filmmaker Brandon Li.

You can check out our reaction video to the 1st place winners in each category.

Now, without further ado, let’s take a look at all the winners.

The Ad Category

3rd Place

Artflex – Every Angle by Conor Tychowski

This is an intense ad that can serve as an excellent example of using Artgrid’s stories. The split-screen showing the same action from different angles gives a sense of continuity and perfectly fits the ad’s message.

For his 3rd place finish, Conor will receive:

  • Spiffy Gear’s Lumiee Bi-Color
  • Lume Cube PANEL MINI
  • Røde VideoMicro
  • 1-year subscription to the Artgrid Creator plan
  • 1-year subscription to the Artlist Music plan

2nd Place

Morpheus: The No-Sleeping Pills by Matheus H. Santos

From the video cassette noise effects and warped voice-over to the choice of footage of people smiling, Matheus does excellent work in making this ad look like it was made in the VHS era. This is a parody of ’80s and ’90s infomercials, and the ad concept of marketing sleep-preventing pills to company CEOs to make their workers more efficient is funny and biting.

The Brazilian filmmaker shared his ad timeline on IG

2nd place will reward Matheus with:

  • Spiffy Gear’s Lumiee Duo Bundle
  • Lume Cube PANEL GO
  • Røde VideoMic NTG
  • 1year subscription to the Artgrid Creator plan
  • 1-year subscription to the Artlist Music plan

Now from retro to futuristic.

1st Place

Soulmate VR – Only Available on Artgrid VR Headsets by Anna Kotyza

First, a disclaimer: As of the writing of this post, Artgrid has not released VR headsets.

However, if we were to release VR Headsets, we would strongly consider adding ‘Soulmate VR.’

This ad for a VR dating app from the future has a strong ‘Black Mirror’ vibe working for it. From the creative idea, the impeccable script to the sci-fi realist look, you sure feel like this is a commercial you will be watching in the not-so-distant future.

For her 1st place finish, Anna Kotyza will receive:

  • Blackmagic Pocket 4K camera
  • The newly released Zhiyun gimbal
  • DJI Mavic Mini

The Movie Trailer Category

3rd Place

Dreamwalkers by Ryan Chubby Chatfield, aka rzarekt

Two elements pushed this trailer to a podium finish: the quality eerie VFX and the tension building editing.

This video also gets extra points for the awesome Japanese narrator and the enlightening editing timeline on IG.

For his 3rd place finish, Ryan Chubby Chatfield will receive:

  • Spiffy Gear’s Lumiee Bi-Color
  • Lume Cube PANEL MINI
  • Røde VideoMicro
  • 1-year subscription to the Artgrid Creator plan
  • 1-year subscription to the Artlist Music plan

2nd Place

The Gate by Matt Sears

When you make a film trailer, especially a horror film, you need to make sure not to reveal too much of the plot but still make the story understandable. When you make a trailer for a fictional horror movie, it’s easy to compromise on your storytelling in favor of your tension-building efforts. Not our friend Matt Sears. The British filmmaker’s trailer for what looks like a sci-fi horror thriller that’s part psychological and part apocalyptic shows a compelling storyline while also managing to be intense and scary all the way through.

On a mission to find water on Mars, the expedition discovers a gate (perhaps to another dimension), threatening to destroy the world. Each element in this trailer serves the storytelling, from the perfectly crafted red-brown-yellow color palette and the haunting sound design all the way to the VFX.

The result is a tension-filled and disturbing trailer for a movie we can’t wait to watch.

2nd place Matt Sears will receive:

  • The Spiffy Gear Lumiee Duo Bundle
  • Lume Cube PANEL GO
  • Røde VideoMic NTG
  • 1year subscription to the Artgrid Creator plan
  • 1-year subscription to the Artlist Music plan

1st Place

THEY by Saroosh Ali

We start with a 911 phone call and a woman’s scream for help, understanding that a crime has been committed. Then we get to the interrogation, where the suspect claims that ‘he’ told him to commit the crime. Who is he? That is the mystery, but the trailer hints at religious motifs through the footage and the cross-shaped ‘T’ in ‘THEY.’

With breathtaking sound design, a bone-chilling script and perfect editing, this trailer stayed in our heads long after we watched it.

Here’s what Saroosh Ali will get for his winning trailer:

  • Blackmagic Pocket 4K camera
  • The newly released Zhiyun gimbal
  • DJI Mavic Mini
  • Spiffy Gear Spekular Core Kit
  • Lume Cube 2.0 Pro Lighting Kit
  • Røde VideoMic pro+
  • 1-Year subscription to Red Giant
  • 1-year subscription to the Artlist Music + SFX plan
  • 1-year subscription to the Artgrid Pro plan
  • 30 LUT pack
  • An MSI Prestige monitor

The Music Category

3rd Place

Jake Schlegel – “Break the Lock” by Chase Miles

Simple concept, perfect execution. It’s touching, rough and sad without being cliché. Chase Miles creates two contrasting timelines by editing together five stories. On one side, you have two by Via Films that show two kids/brothers/friends playing at the pool and fishing. On the other side, you have three stories by Artgrid’s creative director Omri Ohana – one is about two men in a car planning a robbery, and the other two are about the robbery itself.

Miles enhances the contrast between the timelines by giving the childhood story a bright, nostalgic look, very different from the original look on Artgrid. It all fits the song perfectly, and thanks to smart editing, you see organic transitions between the two timelines, giving a sense of continuity and nostalgia and creating in the viewer a connection to the characters.

2nd Place

Nameless Servant – DEVILS by Paul Pierre Alexandre (aka Ago)

Choosing a Powerful Kendrick Lamaresque Indie Hip Hop track, Ago gives his music video a bright red devil color, instantly establishing a connection between the diverse clips he uses. This, too, is a simple concept, but it’s very well executed. The result is an intense sonic and visual ride that never gets over the top.

1st Place

IamDayLight – Seine River by Linfini

Epic sound design and masterful editing are what separate this music video from the rest of the competition.

The concept is the circle of life, and the video begins with the filmmaker’s own sonic introduction that features Artlist SFX coupled with abstract imagery from Artgrid. The song starts when life begins and goes through childhood, adulthood, relationships, giving life again and then aging together. The music is a touching and minimalistic piano-led waltz. It has a tender sound, a wistful playing style and repetitive lines that add a reflective quality.

To match the music’s feel, Linfini gives her video a nostalgic look, starting off in silent-film style black and white, then going for soft, faded color grading when adulthood begins and making the colors stronger as time goes on. The quick transitions and background sounds of people talking, water flowing or burning fire add vitality and intimacy to the video.

Bottom line, this video beautifully blends the intimate with the philosophical and manages to be both touching and thought-provoking.

These are the prizes that Linfini will receive:

  • Blackmagic Pocket 4K camera
  • The newly released Zhiyun gimbal
  • DJI Mavic Mini
  • Spiffy Gear Spekular Core Kit
  • Lume Cube 2.0 Pro Lighting Kit
  • Røde VideoMic pro+
  • 1-Year subscription to Red Giant
  • 1-year subscription to the Artlist Music + SFX plan
  • 1-year subscription to the Artgrid Pro plan
  • 30 LUT pack
  • Westcott light

Judges’ Favorite

The Conservatoire movie trailer by Francois Wessels

Last but not least, our panel of judges chose this trailer for a film about a conservatorium as their favorite.

With the intense orchestral composition Continent by ANBR and a smart edit of abstract imagery alongside narrative clips, Francois Wessesl creates a gripping trailer for an arthouse horror film, giving out just the right innuendos and disturbing imagery to really build expectations in the viewers.

As the judges’ favorite, Francois Wessels will receive:

  • Zhiyun Crane-M2
  • 1-year subscription to the Artgrid Creator plan
  • 1-year subscription to the Artlist Music plan

Congrats to all the winners; hope you will put your prizes to good use. Until the next competition, stay creative!
